2019 Harvest Report Douro
The Douro region suffered less from the heathwave this year than many other European wine regions outside Portugal. It did, however, receive little rainfall and thus grapes within the Douro region are a little smaller than normal. However, this also resulted into a greater concentration within the grapes.
The vineyards in the Douro region suffered from a low intensity of mildew but this did not affect the production to much in general. A bigger problem for the region is a shortage of labourers for the harvest. Many young people have left and therefore a smaller labour pool is available to harvest an increasing amount of grapes.
Throughout the Douro an increase in yield of around 30% compared to last year and 16% above the 5-year average is noted.
