The antiviral properties of certain fruits such as persimmons have been well documented. Researchers at North Carolina State University recently discovered that raw extracts of green tea, cocoa and two varieties of muscadine grapes (Vitis rotundifolia) harvested in the United States as table or wine grapes are also capable of inhibiting the function of SARS-Cov-2, which causes Covid-19.

“These foods have abundant flavan-3-ols and proanthocyanidins and disrupt the way the virus replicates and attaches itself to human cells”, said De-Yu Xie, the study's lead author. The researchers conducted in vitro laboratory experiments which showed that the polyphenols inhibited the virus by binding with its Mpro protease and they insist that polyphenols could play a part in a pandemic therapy.

According to American researchers, flavanols and proanthocyanidins in grapes and wine prevent the SARS-CoV-2 virus from attaching itself to human cells. The polyphenols, which are also present in green tea and cocoa, could thus help in the fight against the pandemic.

Off course, we all know that alcohol is not a healthy nutrient and will probably eliminate all other benificial effects as mentioned above....but news likes this does put a smile on our face in these COVID dominated days.
